JOB DESCRIPTION SENIOR PASTOR
SUMMARY:
The Senior Pastor shall be devoted to the service of the Chinese Grace Bible Church (CGBC), in preaching, teaching and spiritually developing members; leading a multi-cultural and multi-congregational church; administrating the church staff and leaders; and performing pastoral care for members. The Senior Pastor is the leader to whom the congregation, the pastoral team, the administrative staff, and the church board/committees look to for leadership, guidance and accountability.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
I. Preaching, Teaching, and Spiritual Development (50%)
- Be responsible for directing the overall preaching and teaching ministry of the church, including adult, youth and children programs.
- Preach and teach the Word of God as the primary pastor for one of the language congregations, while preaching at least 3 times annually to each of the other language congregations.
- Encourage and nurture spiritual development, ensuring all programs created meet the needs of English and/or Chinese speaking adults with elements of worship, instruction, fellowship and evangelism.
- Teach CGBC to be an effective witness for Christ with an intentional focus on both evangelism of the local community and missions work around the world.
- Equip and train members to be spiritual leaders in their homes and in the church.
II. Leadership and Administration (30%)
- Leader of the church and public point of contact.
- Provide vision, leadership, and direction for a multi-cultural church.
- Coordinate and foster commitment of a multi-congregational church model (3-in-1).
- Work closely with elected lay leaders, and through the congregational pastor to direct ministerial teams in different congregations and committees to help them plan and lead different ministerial programs.
- Provide spiritual insight and input to guide financial and property management decisions.
- Supervise all paid staff ensuring active mentoring and regular feedback.
- Develop staff goals and annual performance evaluations.
- Responsible for the hiring and firing of paid staff members.
III. Pastoral Care (20%)
- Develop and mentor the pastoral staff, helping each member to build on his/her individual God-endowed strengths and gifts, and strengthen each in his/her walk with the Lord.
- Oversee, but entrust to the Associate Pastors or Executive Board Members the assimilation of new members to the church; and to address inactive and/or absent members.
- Discipleship of the members under his care. This includes actively modeling a healthy Christian life.
- Delegate/share in the church’s programs, communions, baptisms, and wedding and funeral responsibilities with the Associate Pastors and Elders as appropriate.
- Be responsible for disciplining members as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
I. Personal Character/Traits:
- Demonstrates a personal faith in Jesus Christ and shows evidence of a continuing growth in their personal spiritual life.
- Must be a person of prayer and possesses an in-depth knowledge of the Word of God.
- Demonstrates a high level of personal moral integrity.
- A good testimony representing Christ at home life and with the community at large.
Sensitive to our culturally diverse congregation and community.
II. Skill and Ability
- Ability to communicate Biblical truth clearly with the application to our changing world.
- Ability to maintain healthy balance between organization effectiveness (what to do) and organizational efficiency (how to do it).
- Ability to promote and enhance congregational unity and harmony.
- Ability to lead church members to use their diverse spiritual gifts faithfully and fruitfully.
- Skillful with equipping church members for service.
III. Education/Work Experience:
- Master of Divinity degree or equivalent preferred from an Accredited Evangelical Seminary.
- 7 or more years experience serving a church as a pastor.
- 3 years supervisory experience is preferred.
